In the 1960's, methadone gained popularity for treating opioid addiction in the United States: it was easy to manufacture, cheap, and blocked other opioids. Buprenorphine (Suboxone and Subutex) was introduced as an opioid addiction treatment when Congress passed the Drug Addiction Treatment Act in 2000.

Milligram for milligram, methadone is three times more powerful than morphine in pain relief. By comparison, the standard dose of 8mg of buprenorphine has the pain relief quality of an Ibuprofen 800mg pill. And, buprenorphine is so much more powerful in blocking other opioids that it can even block methadone.

Of the two, Suboxone and Subutex are much weaker in the pain relief category, but much stronger in the opioid blocking category. This translates into a decreased likelihood of getting hooked on buprenorphine as compared to methadone, and an easier time of weaning off of Subutex and Suboxone than it is to wean from methadone.

Finally, buprenorphine can be prescribed in the privacy of a physicians office, while methadone (for addiction treatment purposes) must be dosed daily in a clinic. So, for ease of use, and ease of weaning, Suboxone and Subutex are far superior for the average person struggling with opioid addiction.
