Boredom and Relapse

Boredom, the sense of never-changing repetition, can lead to depression, anxiety, and a sense of helplessness which motivate us towards negative behaviors. Our frustration with boredom and it’s ability to sap all the color from our lives can drive us into compromising or even self-destructive situations we might never otherwise consider. Yet, the surprising thing about boredom is that it often envelopes us just when we’ve finally achieved some of our most sought after and hard earned goals.

Given the many challenges involved in addiction recovery, it’s not surprising we emphasize baby steps. Addictions usually leave us physically, emotionally and financially destroyed, so that in the beginning there are an overwhelming number of challenges we must face: regaining our physical health, sorting out our emotions, securing employment, and recreating our home and family lives, to name a few. Yet, success can have many rewards, but it can, at times, once accomplished, also be boring.

So, always pursue several new goals at the same time. That way, when you accomplish one, there are others to keep your attention and mind focused, thus avoiding stagnation, repetition, boredom and, most importantly, relapse.
