Suboxone Doctor in Miami: Dr. Mitchell’s Clinic

Early Recovery and Relapse
by Dr. Robert Ben Mitchell, D.O. - 786-262-5750

I can never say this enough: it’s easy to get clean, the tough part is staying clean. Most addicts can put on a good face for 24 hours. Even Benjamin Franklin once said, “Quitting tobacco is easy. I’ve done it dozens of times.”

When it comes to early-phase recovery, it’s not the first 12, 24 or 48 hours that matter, it’s the first 12 days, 24 weeks, and 48 months that count. Yet, how many people can stop and never look back? Very few. That’s whey relapse is so common early on in recovery.

I tell my new patients that starting recovery is like learning to ride a bike: you’re going to fall down a few times before you get it right. This means that what matters is not whether you relapse, but how you respond to relapse when it happens to you.

Relapses can be some of our best teachers. They expose flaws in our recovery strategies and give us the opportunity to design better ones. They also reinforce the value of the support we get from counseling, medication assisted therapy, employment, and relationships.

So in early recovery, don’t worry about if you’re going to relapse. Worry about how you’re going to respond to it when it happens to you. And when it does, remember to get up, dust yourself off, and keep pedaling.
