Suboxone Doctor in Miami: Dr. Mitchell’s Clinic

Creativity and Recovery
by Dr. Robert Ben Mitchell, D.O. - 786-262-5750

Okay, so you stopped using recreational drugs, you’ve gotten a job and have somewhere to live, and maybe you’ve even begun rebuilding some of the family/friend bridges you burned. Now what? Recovery can be an extremely long process: lifelong. Lacking the excitement and spontaneity of drug use, it can easily become a rut of repetitive, daily drudgery which, if left unchecked, exacerbates cravings and withdrawals. So, how do you counter this and avoid relapse: creativity.

Creativity doesn’t mean becoming famous or doing something amazing that others will pay you for. It’s about allowing your own self-expression to become your new portal to excitement and spontaneity, even if for just a party of one: you.

Creativity can come in many forms, including art, music, dance, and crafts. For me it was song-writing, and 50 years of self-expressing through words and music has reinforced my long-term stable recovery, as each song I wrote saved me $60 on the therapist’s couch. And even though I might be the world’s greatest “never-was-been,” my creativity, even if enjoyed by just me, has helped me to avoid relapse for decade, after decade, after decade.

So what is creativity for you?
